On 7 August, within the framework of the Third United Nations Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDC3), the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) held key discussions on the implementation of the right to development in the context of the Awaza Programme of Action. At a parallel event, the need to integrate the right to development into the implementation of the Programme of Action for LLDCs and the obligation of states to cooperate in this sphere at both national and international levels was emphasized. The discussion was attended by representatives of UN agencies, governments, civil society, academia, and youth. Participants considered how the Programme of Action for LLDCs could be grounded in human rights and incorporate the principles of the right to development to effectively address the challenges facing these countries. The OHCHR called for the following steps: to ensure that development strategies are people-centred; to combat inequality through targeted policies; to fulfil human rights obligations; to engage in constructive international cooperation; and to guarantee the active and free participation of the population in the planning and implementation of projects
